This novel set in Atlanta, USA and the Tele valley of South Africa, is a gem. Legend has it that the original Tele River people fled the coastal Transkei because some had features linking them to white survivors of the Grosvenor wreck. It was a serious disadvantage at one stage in history for Xhosa people to carry physical evidence of the whitebrush! Further legend is that some Xhosa ladies in the Tele valley owned pearls collected from mussels and oysters. They learnt the value of pearls from Lydia Logie, a Grosvenor survivor. This is highly unusual, as Xhosa people traditionally threw pearls away, regarding them as a hazard, causing broken teeth. The novel evidences some fascinating cultural practices of original Xhosa tribal life. There is also a unique legendary story describing the only known incident when San and Xhosa were allies in a war against Zulu warriors.
