Five words to strike fear into the hearts of spies and evildoers everywhere: Jamie Madrox, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Except that when Madrox decides it's time to start gathering in the stray dupes that are still wandering around, the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent doesn't especially want to go...and S.H.I.E.L.D. isn't especially inclined to let him go. Plus: Remember X-Factor #87? "X-Aminations," the analysis issue? Sure you do. Everybody does. Well, Peter David and new regular artist Pablo Raimondi evoke memories of that classic tale with "Re-X-Aminations" as the new team unloads their hopes, fears and darkest secrets to an attentive Doc Samson. Collects X-Factor #13-17.
It is number 3 in this new series of tales of X-Factor, in which Peter DAVID mixes the classic "mutie" line of events (such as the complicate "House of M" affair) with a "film noir" feel and a "realistic" portraying of relationships within a group of male and female twenty-somethings. Particularily interesting is Madrox, a mutant (of sorts) that duplicates himself when hit. And he is hit rather often. He even creates by himself new duplicates that he dispatches around only to "reintegrate" them after a time in order to gain their new knowledge (duplicates work for SHIELD, are priests or private dicks, for instance). Though artist Pablo RAIMONDI is not, in my opinion, as good as Ryan SOOK in giving life to DAVID's X-Force stories, the resulting product is rather gripping and refreshing. This volume is a good read by itself but newcomers to X-Force should start with volume 1 (The Longest Night).
