"Boys... I hate tuh tell yuh this.Mah mother...God bless that wonderful woman...didn't raise me tuh utter un ugly word 'bout one uh the Lord's cretures,no matter how low...but I got tuh say,y'all are the worst-lookin',evil-smellin' pack uh back-hill mud-wallowers I ever did see.Mah horse didn't lead me inta Creede. Mah nose did." This is an exciting, well constructed and written Old West Western in all respects. It takes place in the wild silver mining town of Creede , Colorado ,about 130 miles as the crow flies southwest of Colorado Springs. It was pretty wild and booming place back in the 1880's with little law and order. The town was run by Bob Ford, the fellow who had shot Jesse James in the back.Things changed when Randolph Jefferson "Soapy" Smith arrives and decides he has dfferent ideas of who should be top dog. We even find Bat Masterson carrying out the responsibilities of Town Sheriff. What we get is lots of fast action, gunfights and everything you expect when such tough forces collide and decide that "winner thaks all". Although the author is new to me, and seems to be more of a Mystery writer, musician, stage hand, spent time in University studying Criminalogy,Irish Literature,Hollywood film business, schoolteacher, and a variety of occupations;he has done a fine job with this western novel With this period in history, there is an overabundance of legend and wild stories;the reader gets the feel that he gets a pretty good insight into life during the Old West times. The writer fills his storytelling with great lines like; "You ought've stayed away from Creede,Smith.Ain't much of a place to die." "It's likely nobody knew Golden Eye's name. But you'll know her,Lord, like you know all her sisters in trade.Well, for one thing she was a China girl, but a real sweet one.And you'll know the burdens she had to bear." "Hell, ever'body in Mexico knows when el presidente gives yuh the embrace of eternal friendship, they're already diggin'yuhr grave somewhere." Don't overlook this one,it's a good one!!
