A Living History
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 21 years ago
This is a wonderful exploration of the Jews of Napa Valley, California, which is more known for its fantastic wines and lush scenery than the pioneering spirit of those who settled there, though this book should help correct that perception. Weber, a wonderful storyteller and historian, guides the reader on the adventurous journeys of dozens of Jewish families who came to the Napa Valley in the 19th and 20th centuries to settle, realize their dreams, and build their fortunes "under the vine and the fig tree." Many of these settlers turned out to be key players in making the Napa Valley what it is today. The stories of how they left Europe and made their way to California (with nothing but pure chutzpah in many cases!)are as good as any engaging novel. This vivid and informative book is a must-read for everyone interested in contemporary Jewish and Californiam social history.
