Annja Creed jumps at the chance to join a fellow archaeologist on a quest to find a relic. But she's not so thrilled about northern Siberia, where they are hoping to discover something buried in the long-undisturbed soil of Russia's frozen terrain. When they reach the town of Jakutsk, Annja is put off by its gray landscape and highly superstitious inhabitants. They claim they are being hunted. Then one of the villagers goes missing. The locals blame the Khosadam, a ghost of a fallen goddess said to ingest the souls of the departed. But there are no fresh graves. She is now hunting the living. When Annja seeks to destroy the apparition, she discovers an even more horrifying truth--and may have hit a dead end.
Since this was my first Rogue Angel book, I had no preconceived ideas about the characters or knowledge of their history. Unlike some reviewers, I had no problems with a character being introduced as an old friend who had not appeared in a previous book. Even if I had read other books, it probably wouldn't have bothered me. Since I had nothing to base my expectations on, I wasn't bothered by the decision making of the characters. While I didn't agree with every decision that every character made it didn't take away from the story. People have been known to make decisions that are not always the brightest. I did however like how the author was able to keep the action flowing with a minimum amount of characters. No fun when the author introduces so many characters that you have to create a scorecard to keep them straight. I would suggest if you did what I did and started reading the series with the current release I would take a peek at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogue_Angel, it has some valuable background information. (I'm still planning to buy the first book in the series.) The descriptions of the characters and setting were perfect. You were able to picture things in your mind's eye without being bogged down in the details. Bottom line I found this book to be an excellent blend of action adventure, science fiction and mystery. Not heavy on any one genre but an enjoyable blending of all three.
Best one yet!

Wow. After reading the other reviewer's comments, I have to totally disagree. I have also followed this series regularly, and I had been disappointed in the past about some of the anticlimactic endings of the others. This one was a refreshing change -- you thought you knew what was going on, but that conflict was somewhat resolved in the middle of the book. The story took a bit of a turn after that and got a little more interesting rather than tapering off. I liked this one and look forward to the next.
