THE SECRET OF THE ROSE is an absorbing, fast-paced novel with an unusually fully-developed and admirable young heroine. As an English teacher, I think this book would be a fine way to introduce students to the Elizabethan period and to some notable literary and political figures. Perhaps even more important, the book calls attention to the cruel consequences of religious intolerance--an important message for students who hear about religious conflicts in various parts of the world today, often between groups that should be able to realize how much they have in common.
