"The Remarkable Miss Shattuck," Robert Underhill's latest book, is a fictionalized biography of an inspiring person. Fredrica Van Trice Shattuck graduated from high school at the beginning of the twentieth century and earned degrees from the University of Wisconsin and Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. She went to the New York City area hoping to make a career on stage, but those hopes were dashed when she could only find employment as a walk-on character or in a crowd scene.Following advice from a mentor at Cornell, she applied for a teaching position at Iowa State College in Ames, and in 1907 began her teaching career, winning recognition as a distinguished professor, founder of the Iowa State Players, a student organization which some of its veterans would fondly remember and endow with generous benevolence for buildings at their Alma Mater. The Remarkable Miss Shattuck passed away on November 20, 1969, at the age of 86, and was buried in the cemetery of Iowa State University.
