Why did the US make a commitment to an independent South Vietnam? Could a major war have been averted? Fredrik Logevall provides a concise, comprehensive and accessible introduction to the origins of the Vietnam War from the end of the Indochina War in 1954 to the eruption of full-scale war in 1965, and places events against their full international background.
I had to read this book for my Modern History class in college, and I must say it is a great piece of literature even outside the world of academia. It has been published within the last couple years and includes an updated account on why Vietnam was "chosen" to be America's war. The CIA and FBI have recently released taped conversations with Kennedy, LBJ, and Mcnamara that shed a new light on Vietnam. There is no bias or revisionist history here. Logevall takes a broad balanced approach to why the United States pursued Vietnam so purposefully despite worldwide disapproval and indifference. Reccommended highly.
