This is a story about Competence ("Compy") Ames, a young woman who grew up in Brahamin Boston in the 1920's and 1930s and of her struggle with her parent's divorce, her overbearing mother and her effort to get to college and subsequently - in the early 1940's - to become a doctor in the face of the male-dominated medical profession.
