While the most widely held view is of the absent-minded professor, the more accurate view is that of the harried one. It is generally necessary to start the creative juices flowing in order to create the problems needed for a challenging, realistic examination. Fortunately, there are problem sets like this one available that will reduce the activity level of the teacher at examination time. The problems here are those used in the high school competition exams for the years 1989 through 1994. The problems are very good and tempting, while reading the book, I occasionally stopped to do one. They are also a counterexample to the old joke about anything created by a committee. Although generated by individuals, the problems were passed through a committee, proving that math is powerful enough to survive the sometimes destructive process of a committee. If you are looking for challenging examination problems for advanced high school or lower level college courses, there are many here that are excellent choices. All are multiple choice and the distractors have been chosen with great care. Published in Journal of Recreational Mathematics, reprinted with permission.
