This is the first volume of what the author promises to be a four book series. The first novel in the series sets the tone for what appears to be a multi-generational tale. What a rip roaring tale it is. The story has a wide variety of characters that include a young Irishman fleeing famine ravished Ireland, a Chinese immigrant coming to "Gum Saan" seeking fortune during the state's gold rush and a Native American whose heritage stretches back to the Spanish conquistadors. These character's stories intertwine painting a tapestry of those who settled in the country's 31st state. If you like "Lonesome Dove" you will enjoy this book. Can't wait to read the next one.
