Virginia Miller's lovable Ba and George, Little Black Kitten, and an obliging apple tree star in an oversize counting book featuring more and more red apples on every page. In Bartholomew's garden there stands an old apple tree. Ba loves to climb it, swing from it, hide in it, and rescue Little Black Kitten from its branches. But best of all, he loves counting its delicious red apples before George shakes them into a basket to make hot apple pie. In fact, Ba loves counting so much that he doesn't say "Nah!" once!
It's hard to explain just how much my 1.5 year old daughter loves this book. She insists on us reading it 5-6 times a day, jumping up and down with delight at the apples, and the numbers, and the little black kitten. The illustrations are elegant and simple, easy for a child to understand. The characters are really well developed. I have read some earlier versions of the Bartholomew bear series, and the drawings were not as refined as they are here. We originally borrowed this from the library but had to buy a copy because I'm afraid my daughter's heart would break if it were to disappear. Since this book arrived in our home, she's asked for "apples" instead of just "books" every night, and every morning for that matter. Great book.
