The new owner of the family's renowned Arizona resort, Summer Wind, after the sudden death of her father, Kiera Donovan is confronted with sabotage and threatening takeover bids, and she joins forces with gorgeous spa owner Jesse Lawton to find a killer.
I thoroughly enjoyed this romance/mystery set in the Arizona desert. Ms. McFarland's use of imagery is exquisite. I could see the lush resort, Summer Wind, in my mind's eye. And her characterization was superb. Even the minor characters leapt off the page. But Keira and Jesse(what a man!), well they were perfectly matched. Keira could have been seen as just another poor little rich girl, but the author was wise enough to develop her character and let her be revealed as a warm, caring, down-to-earth, and earthy full-bodied woman. No cliches here. I believe Summer Wind was Ms. McFarland's first published novel. If so, then she did a great job, and she has a fan for life. Check it out.

If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride, and if life was truly fair, we would all have a man like Jesse Lawton. This story, paints a picture of life in a world most of us rarely, if ever get to visit. A major resort where death comes to take a holiday is the setting, and when Kiera Donovan inherits Summer Wind, after her father's supicious death, she has to encounter more than the simple problems of tourists. One of those problems turns out to be six feet, three inches of sun-burnished cowboy (um, um, um!) named Jesse Lawton. He's a strong man of honor with a brave heart, and the fact that he has a cute butt doesn't hurt either. He's also a man who knows what he wants from himself, and the woman in his life. Is it Kiera? You'll just have to read to find out, but I promise if you start this one -- you will definitely finish it!McFarland handles the scenery flawlessly and tends to color her wide-ranging characters with all the best shades of humanity. Even better, her use of language and dialogue are a pleasure to read.Looking for more from her soon. The lady is talented.
