On arriving in Jasper, Texas, Theo is warned to stay away from the junkyard where Old Man Crampton lives with his pet pig, because folks say that he swallows kids whole. Inevitably, Theo finds the junkyard and by using a child's lack of prejudice, the book shows how people are often misjudged.
This is one of my favorite children's books. While it does teach the wisdom of being open to new people and experiences, it doesn't feel at all preachy. Instead, it's lively, colorful, and fun. It's one of those books that adults will like as much as the kids.
Learning that being different is okay.

This beautifully illustrated book teaches the lesson that you can't always believe what others say about people who look or act "different". A girl visitng her aunt in a small Texas town learns that lesson and passes it along to all of the other residents. A must for "pig lovers". One of Ms. Tusa's best books.
