Brigit Barrasford, a lovely young woman haunted by voices and visions outside the bounds of ordinary life, struggles to come to terms with her unusual powers in a romantic adventure that spans the late 1930s through World War II. As a lonely child growing up on the Isle of Man in the care of an unloving aunt, Brigit turns to her imaginary friend Michael for companionship. When Brigit immigrates to America in her teens to live with an uncle in Boston, she feels as if she has left Michael behind forever. But when she begins to work with psychic researchers, Michael emerges as her control, identifying himself as the spirit of a Druid priest who lived and died many centuries past. Gifted with ancient wisdom and brought to life by their spiritual connection, Michael becomes more and more real as he guides Brigit through her daring, dangerous war work and the heartaches of her personal life. In order for the time-crossed couple to consummate their deep love, Michael takes spiritual possession of an officer in the OSS. Brigit and Michael spend an idyllic time together in war-ravaged England until he must return to the frontlines. The story of Brigit and Michael's ageless love is bracketed by the journey of Brigit's daughter, Michelle, an archeologist, as she slowly becomes aware of her own unique heritage while she excavates Michael's cairn on the Isle of Man. Dolores Stewart Riccio is the author of The Circle of Five and its 9 sequels and The Ghost Who Came Home from the Auction
I read a lot and have read many, many books on spirtualism and spiritual journeys. "Spirit" was one of the first of this kind that I read. I loved it then it remains in my top 10 books of this genre "Spirit" is passionate, humbling and awe-inspiring. The book is well-written, interesting and definitely not "preachy" or boring. It instills hope in the existence of the world beyond and faith that all of us have our own unique gifts to discover. Thumbs up on this one!

Wonderful story

I just read Spirit and fell in love with this story. Ms. Riccio's books are always such a pleasure to read and her characters are so well written that you feel as if they are people you know. Spirit takes place in the 1930's and 1940's, has a wonderful love story, and quite a bit of intrigue during the years of World War II. Brigit's psychic abilities begin in childhood and her loved ones aren't supportive of her gift. This makes much of her early life difficult until she learns to keep some things to herself. Michael, the spirit of a Druid priest, befriends her as a child and becomes someone she can trust and depend on as she matures. Michael is there for her through the many hardships and trials that Brigit endures. Their love illustrates love that is eternal, timeless and knows no boundaries. He guides her as she learns who she can and cannot trust, especially as she is learning to develop her psychic abilities and work with agencies assisting in the war efforts. Spirit is just a joy to read. I heartily recommend it.

Set in the late 1930's and World War II, Spirit by Dolores Stewart Riccio is the story of Brigit, a young woman with clairvoyant powers. As Brigit matures she must learn the lessons of life. Her imaginary childhood friend turns out to be the spirit of a Druid priest, who offers guidance and comfort in her darkest hours. Spirit is enthusiastically recommended reading as being a particularly unique and touching story embedded with both a necessary hope and an ultimate renewal.

I'm an avid reader, but it wasn't until I read Spirit that I felt compelled to submit a review. This wonderfully entertaining novel about a young woman with clairvoyant abilities is the sort of book you just can't put down once you've started to read it. I have recommended it to all of my friends. I think it's fascinating reading for anyone who lived during the 1930s and 1940s, for anyone who is interested in the occult, and for anyone who just enjoys being engrossed in an unusual story. I believe this is Dolores Riccio's first novel. I'm hoping it won't be her last.
