Speak to My Heart: A Novel

A great story, perfectly written, and while I suppose it's important to note this is a book with a spiritual theme, it's also a fine piece of fiction apart from that, entertaining and genuine. An excellent read.

Serena Jasper is a rising star in her advertising firm. She has a full life, including a wonderful relationship with her mother who has raised her alone since her father's death. Everything changes when Serena decides to pursue additional education to further propel her career, and in the process is made aware of a traumatic family secret. Serena is devastated and turns her back on everyone she's trusted before, including her mother whom she can't believe had a part in the secret and her faith in God. While Serena struggles to determine what all this means for her life and future, she also has to help her girlfriend deal with an abusive mate and a young girl she is mentoring deal with tough decisions that will affect her future. Serena attempts to throw herself into her work, but soon finds that she will need to depend upon someone, maybe a new friend that she bumped into, literally, on the road. This debut novel by Ms. Stacy Hawkins Adams flows wonderfully. I can't wait for her next foray into Serena's life and any other stories that may flow from her hand. Well done!

This book will have you laughing, crying and saying "Amen!" Stacy Hawkins Adams is a master at pulling at your heart strings with words. Warning: Don't start this book if you have somewhere to go or something to do right away - you'll want to finish the book in one sitting...it's that good! Stacey Hawkin Adams' debut novel will really hit home for anyone who has ever tried to run from God! Serena Jasper has just learned a secret that will change her whole life. The night she learns she has been accepted into a prestigious university, her mother delivers some devastating news of her own. This news drastically changes everything Serena has believed about her life. This news affects Serena so much that she turns her back on her mother, the church and God. Speak to My Heart really deals with the psychological destructiveness of secrets and how God uses the people in our lives, even the people who hurt us the most to heal us. While Serena is the main character in the book, many other characters give the book a rich and fast paced storyline. Erika, Serena's roommate must deal with a boyfriend who is physically and emotionally abusive while Twanna, a teen Serena mentored must deal with an unexpected pregnancy. All of the characters in the book are very real people who must deal with the ups and downs of everyday life. They remind us that sometimes life causes us to take our focus off of God and the people that matter and need us the most. There are times in all of our lives where we feel doubt, insecurity and distant from God. I recommend this book for anyone who is going through a "spiritual dry spell". This book reminds us that God speaks to us even when we are not listening. He speaks words of forgiveness, reconciliation, encouragement, restoration and love. What a refreshing read. Every page not only offers inspiration but entertainment. After I read my copy, I ordered several more for gifts. I DEFINITELY recommend "Speak to My Heart." The story isn't traditional or hackneyed. I don't want to ruin the story for you, but I promise, you'll alternate between, laughing, crying and nodding in agreement.
