My Husband had been searching for this book for decades. I can't describe the way he looked when I gave it to him for Christmas.

Bigarse spaceships. That is what we want, or hugearse spaceships, even, and this is absolutely what this book gives you, in rather nice, artistic detail. As in, 'mum, where can I buy one of these babies'? Throw in some background and details, and you don't need to say any more about it, really.

I've had a copy of this book since the very early 1980s, so I must assume it is an earlier edition. I actually remember seeing it often in shops like Waldenbooks throughout the '80s, so I know it isn't rare. What it IS, though, is one of the most interesting and special books I had as a child. While the main text is about themes in science fiction, it is the captions for the many illustrations that make this book shine. The authour goes to great length to link all the illustrations, themselves culled from the sea of great sci-fi art, into a pictorial narrative of a vast and ancient galactic empire. He ties-in all sorts of well known places and events from many of the genre's best works with what appears to be his own future history. The result is something strange and compelling that completely captivated a young me and fired my imagination. In fact, it is because of this that I most heartily recommend that any parents of young children reading this review buy this book for their children's libraries. It is the kind of book that casual access to may very well expand a young person's ideas of what a big universe we have and what potential adventures it holds. That being said, the book is full of no small number of typographical errors, but I can forgive it that; not only for its specialness, but also because it was written and laid-out in a time that I imagine predated sophisticated word processing and seems more a small-scale labour of love than a product of a large organisation with copy editors to spare.
A great guide to science fiction

I am a sci-fi fan, and this book provided me with some great info and illustrations from books like Dune. IT also shows the cover illustration from the little-known movie Def-Con 4, wich is a good illustration in regards to the movie. I suggest that if you are a science-fiction fan, I strongly recommend that you buy this book
