Book Overview

Sophonisba, or Hannibal's Overthrow: A Tragedy is a play written by Nathaniel Lee and published in 1704. The play is set during the Second Punic War and follows the story of Sophonisba, the daughter of Hasdrubal, a Carthaginian general. Sophonisba is married to Syphax, the king of Numidia, but her heart belongs to Hannibal, the Carthaginian general. When Syphax betrays Hannibal, Sophonisba is forced to marry Masinissa, a Numidian prince loyal to Rome. Hannibal tries to rescue Sophonisba, but ultimately she chooses to take her own life rather than be taken as a prisoner of war. The play explores themes of love, loyalty, and sacrifice, and is considered one of Lee's most successful works. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
