I have enjoyed giving this book as a gift to several friends and relatives and hearing how much everyone has liked the story. Ms. Kirchner writes intelligently and knows how to plot. The images of India are beautiful.
Enchanting -- has movie potential

I was born in India and am amazed how true to life this story seems. Putting the book down was virtually impossible. Ms. Kirchner's characters are fun people -- not angst-ridden like some Indian authors. I'd like to see the movie!

As a former bookseller I have read many first novels. Most are just so-so.This one has impressed me. The author has put in a lot of effort and her talent and care shows. This book is well plotted and well-crafted and in places poetically written. I also went to a reading by the author in Portland, and she did a strong presentation.

As a mother who has adopted an Indian child, I really enjoyed reading the story of Meena. Mrs. Gossett's diary entries and her unwillingness to let Meena go back to her village are realistically and beautifully told. And the ending fit.
