Comedian and talk-show host Joy Behar has teamed up with illustrator Gene Barretta to create a feisty, lovable character in this cheerful, funny picture book. When Max the mixed-breed meets a pack of snobby purebred dogs in the dog run, he can't understand why they don't want to play with him and his mongrel friends. Determined to get everyone to play together, brainy Max who is part poodle, after all comes up with a way to break the ice between the mixed-breeds and the purebreds. America's current obsession with designer dogs makes this book as timely as it is lively."
I purchased this book as a Christmas present for my nephew as we have a dog just like the one in the story. He just loved it, I think we read it about 5 times that day.Very enjoyable with a theme that will hopefully translate to my nephews interaction with other kids. Although we look different this does not mean we are any less or more superior than others.
My Kind of Book

I bought this to read to the grandchildren. It would make a great gift as well. I'd guess it is a second grade reading level if bought for a child to read on its own. Creative and colorful pictures to keep the little ones interested if read to.
Great little story, beautiful illustrations!

An excellent story for the little ones that carries the message of togetherness and friendship. You'll fall in love with Max and find yourself rooting for him all the way as he tries to remove the barriers between the full bred snoots and the mutts like himself. Gene Barretta's illustrations are nothing short of adorable and help make this story come alive. One has to wonder if Max was really the one behind the so called designer dogs like Puggles and Labradoodles???? Hmmm? This will make a lovely gift for any dog lover, young or old.
A Dog Lover's Book

This book is great for children who love dogs! I'm a dog lover myself. This book has excellent meaning and can show children how to get along with one another even though one's different. Max shows children just how to do that when he was faced the situation himself and shows the other dogs that they all can get along with each other. This book makes a wonderful gift for any child! Kudos to Max.

I love this book ! As a dog lover of mixed breeds for 30 years and a purveyor of fresh children's books too, this book is perfect ! The story is charming and the illustrations are whimsical ! Children will apply this story to "bi-peds" (people) too. It is obvious that Joy loves dogs and understands them. Thanks Joy !
