Ezra Jack Keats was one of the pioneers in creating multi-ethnic settings in picture books for children. This has become significant in children's literature today as the demographics in America changes to reflect an increasingly diverse ethnic population. In "Roberto Walks Home", a young Hispanic boy Roberto waits and waits for his older brother Miguel at school as Miguel had promised he would walk home with Roberto. However, Roberto ends up walking home alone after discovering Miguel has gone off to play basketball with his friends, forgetting his promise to Roberto. In his anger and hurt, Roberto acts up once he gets home, and it is only later that Miguel returns and tries to make up to his younger brother. This is a beautifully-illustrated tale of brotherly love, broken promises and atoning. Highly recommended for preschoolers and up.
Another Keats success.

Roberto Walks Home I loved this story and shared it with my reading partner during Power Lunch. It gives the reader a chance to ask the listener questions on broken promises, keeping ones word, brotherly love and forgiveness. Keats is always worth reading aloud and this book is no exception.
