In this 18th adventure in Adam Hall's epic series, Quiller is sent to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, where chaos abounds as the deadline for the United Nations-supervised elections approaches. There is fear that Pol Pot, creator of the infamous "killing fields," will fight to return the murderous Communist party, known as the Khmer Rouge, to power. Quiller's only ally is Gabrielle Bouchard, a photojournalist who is waging her own personal war against the Khmer Rouge. Though Pol Pot is deathly ill, Quiller learns that he has carefully chosen a successor who plans to direct the next Cambodian bloodbath. Quiller's mission, code-named "Salamander," leads him deep into the perilous jungles of Phnom Penh, where he must protect not only his own life but also the future of Cambodia.
This is among my top 5 audio books, out of the perhaps 50 that I've listened to over the years. The author's wry sense of humor combines with a gift for suspense to make for an excellent spy novel. But there is also a sensitivity to human emotion that is touching at points. Highly recommended.
Kudos ~

I have been a book reader my entire life. This Author (who passed away a few years ago) shall be deeply missed. Written with intelligence and in a manner that the characters (and their souls) become alive on the paper in my hands. It is very likely you have never heard of this author, nor his Quiller series. Warning :) Know up front that if you order one of them, you shall (over time) order all of them. Run do not walk and gather up many enjoyable evenings with all of the Quiller novels. A deep thank you Elleston Trevor, aka Adam Hall for providing me with your words.
What the Sex Pistols did to rock music...

...this author did to the spy thriller--don't be put off by the number of pages, each is fast-paced and the writing style is both accessible as well as being completely original--with all the hoopla over Brosnan quitting the Bond series, Broccoli and co. could do no wrong using this character and series as a template--HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Adam Hall's Quiller is the spy who makes other literary spies look like kids playing Spy vs Spy. And with the passing of Hall (real name Elliston Trevor), this will be the last Quiller book, and for that the world is a poorer place. Quiller Salamander contains all the elements that make reading Quiller delicious: the pragmatic, thoughtful, scarily capable Quiller faced with an impossible mission in impossible circumstances, in a story populated with genuine, solid characters, in an authentic-feeling world. Some spy stories delight in their improbability; Quiller's work is real, in the actual world we all live in. Quiller doesn't rely on gadgets and tricks; he doesn't even routinely carry a gun. But he accomplishes more in a single mission than most of us could in a lifetime. Hall's writing style packs more action in a paragraph than most Hollywood movies can fit in two hours.Re-reading (for example) Ian Fleming's James Bond books just makes me feel embarrassed. But I will enjoy re-reading Quiller all my life, as I enjoy Sherlock Holmes. If you want to immerse yourself in another world, meet Quiller.
