There are ways of photographing pants which show the subject quite adequately for what it is. Then there are ways of photographing plants which brings the resultant picture to life in such a way as to almost reproduce the subject's very scent. Clive Nichols' photographs fall into the latter category. In a book thoughtfully divided into extensive sections on; Equipment, Techniques, Weather, Four Seasons and finally Plants & Gardens, we are taken on a journey which covers every aspect of this subject. Whilst many of the pictures are clearly from large and extensive gardens, others are of a pile of leaves or a close-up of a particular flower that could so easily have been in my garden or yours. The point is, we are shown how to photograph gardens as well as flowers and that is all we can ask of any book on the subject. A worthy addition to the photographer's bookshelf - and perhaps a subject to consider when in-between assignments. NM
