Inspire young children to move from nursery rhymes to serious (but not solemn ) verse with this burgeoning collection that includes poems by Lewis Carroll, Christina Rossetti, Shakespeare, and many others. The illustrations reflect the vitality of the verses. Edward Blishen, who compiled the anthology, was a teacher for 15 years, and the volume has been spectacularly illustrated by Brian Wildsmith.
Edward Blishen's Oxford Book of Poetry for Children, illustrated by Brian Wildsmith, is the best poetry collection for children I have found. Younger children would enjoy hearing many of the poems read aloud and for older children, there are poems of every type and mood. The selection offers poetry of a very high quality and ranges from nursery and nonsense rhymes to many of the language's major poets. I purchased this lovely book for my two grandchildren but they won't be seeing it until I have copied out several old favourites for which I have been searching in vain for some time.
