My soon to be 2nd grader really enjoyed this book, it's nice to find protagonists that seem like realistic and likeable 2nd grade girls. Reading these books has really help ease some of those "what's 2nd grade like?" worries. This book in particular isn't school-based, but does cover some of the normal fair-going stuff of kid-life: what happens if you get lost? What happens if you share a spinny ride with a kid brother? What happens if your parents aren't in great form? I think it's been interesting for my kid to see parents in a less than perfect relationship in a book - it hasn't been anxiety producing for her nor is it a particular emphasis, but is just presented as part of the imperfection of life. This is an age where I think she can begin to factor in a little more reality, can understand the nuances and depth of characters and it's nice to have a book that's easy to read, easy to understand and yet doesn't talk down to kids or pretend that the whole world is always full of fairy magic or shiny happy people.
