Michael De La Noy, the biographer of the late Dr. Michael Ramsey, has once again taken on the task of telling us the story of a towering figure in the Church of England. His portrait of Dr. Stockwood is one which is enlightening, ecouraging and troubling all at once. The text is an easy and pleasant read and covers in quite good detail the life and ministry of this intensely interesting Bishop. The Socialism of an established figure in the British Church is not nearly as troubling as the revelation of Stockwood's relish of wealth, privilege and royalty. And the fact of his homosexuality is not as surprising as what is said of his inability to relate to anyone of any sex on a profound personal level. The author is perhaps a bit naive and adoring, but gives us a colorful and enlightening look at a man who helped shape British religious thought and practice for several decades.
