Book Overview

From the national bestselling author of Alice comes a familiar story with a dark hook--a tale about Peter Pan and the friend who became his nemesis, a nemesis who may not be the blackhearted villain Peter says he is... There is one version of my story that everyone knows. And then there is the truth. This is how it happened. How I went from being Peter Pan's first--and favorite--lost boy to his greatest enemy. Peter brought me to his island because there were no rules and no grownups to make us mind. He brought boys from the Other Place to join in the fun, but Peter's idea of fun is sharper than a pirate's sword. Because it's never been all fun and games on the island. Our neighbors are pirates and monsters. Our toys are knife and stick and rock--the kinds of playthings that bite. Peter promised we would all be young and happy forever. Peter lies.

I'll never look at Hook the same again

While I'm not sure I'd clarify this one as horror, but it's definitely a great Dark Fantasy read; and dark fantasy may as well be a subgenre of horror if it isn't in my opinion. I've never been a big fan of Peter Pan's story. Let's be realistic, the biggest hole in that story is why does Captain Hook hate him so much? It surely isn't just because of a lost hand like J.M. Barre wrote, not when Hook by that point had taken entire lives of Lost Boys. This book answers that question in the most descriptive way. I didn't think I'd like this as much as I did. It seems my game of "cover roulette" has been on point with bringing me gems to dive into. I know I'll personally never look at Hook as the villain Pan makes him out to be anymore. I also know I'll be looking into the other books this author has published because her writing style is on point for pace and description. I give this book 5 of 5 Paws.

This is the first book I have read from this author and it has made want to look into her other works. I did not expect much from this book I had no idea if I would even like it. I received it as a gift. I am so thankful I got it because it has blown me away. The fantastical descriptions of childhood and how it is magical and cruel all at the same time left an impression on me long after finishing it.
