Book Overview

In Railroad Schemes, Holland introduced us to one of the most compelling characters she has ever created: Lily Viner, a young girl raised in the harsh mining camps of Virginia City, rescued by the legendary King Callahan, a wild Irish outlaw, only to lose him in a battle with the railroad barons who controlled the Western frontier. Now, in Lily Nevada, Cecelia Holland continues the dramatic tale of this beautiful, strong-willed woman who flees her dark and violent past to make a new life and name for herself in San Francisco at the dawn of the Gilded Age. It is a time of great opportunity, and even greater peril; when fortunes are built, and lost, overnight; when ruthless tycoons amass great wealth, and growing labor unrest threatens to topple these newly minted empires. Lily has become an actress and soon her great beauty and even greater skill hurtle her into the limelight. But tormented by her shattered past, Lily begins to live a strange double life. By day, she performs in velvet and lace before the fabulously wealthy rulers of San Francisco's new aristocracy. But by night, dressed in men's clothing, she roams the darkest corners of the city, searching for the mother who abandoned her. As embittered workers at last challenge the might of the railroad magnates, the city explodes in violence and turmoil. Alone in a world engulfed in flames, Lily comes face to face with a long-forgotten adversary who could destroy the new life she has won for herself.

JOURNEY TO OLD SAN FRANCISCO

Of all places, I found this little gem in an old book store in Manila, way back on a dusty shelf. With the spider webs and disarray, it seemed appropriate that I would discover an historical novel with a memorable beauty Lily and a good plot. I read it on a trip to Cebu and found it well-written, exciting and wonderful characterization. I passed it on to an Australian so it has likely ended up in a book shop in Melbourne. Good job...I liked it. Will have to read "Railroad Schemes" to catch up on the whole story.

Great Sequel...As Good As The First!!

Cecelia Holland has written a great sequel to her book RAILROAD SCHEMES!! This books has very lovalbe characters, a great story line and is full of real San Francisco history!!

Enjoyable, but not as good as Railroad Schemes

This was a very good novel continueing the story of Lily Viner, the heroine we met in Railroad Schemes. In this sequel Lily is now 20 years old and has joined up with a theatre. Lily has been searching the news papers for any sign that her mother, who left her and her father when Lily was only a toddler. The only thing that Lily nows about her mother is her name, but she won't give up. The Railroad Dective, Brand, is now on the trail of a man, who was formerly a part of the theatre. The man, whose name he finds out from Eva Green (Lily's friend and roommate), has supposedly sent a threatenig letter to the governer of California. When Brand finds them (the theatre) he finds out that Lily is traveling with them. This sets Brand on a whole new quest to steal Lily's heart, while still searching for the man that is plotting against the governor.

First class California history

Ms. Holland has provided a wonderful combination of superb storytelling, colorful characters and real history that jumps off the pages. This is a fascinating picture of San Francisco in the days of its brawling streets and railroad barons. The book seethes with energy. A fine sequel to Railroad Schemes which reaffirms Cecelia Holland's status as a master of the historical novel.
