This exciting, painful book starts with one of the most violent scenes I have known in fifteen years of adult reading. The horror of that beginning hangs over the rest of the novel, a gripping tale of hope and revenge within a dysfunctional French "family." The book is quite rightly an award winner, and it is only to be regretted that Yann Queffelec does not seem to have written anything else for our pleasure. This is a book that once read will forever haunt you, and will bring you back to read it every couple of years. I have lent it to a number of friends, none of whom have been disappointed.
