The Lays or Lais of Marie de France are a collection of short narratives written by the poet Marie de France, probably in the late 12th century. They exemplified the ideas of courtly love and are hugely influential at the time, especially for the progression of what we might call feminism of the time period
Though we know little about Marie, we know she was born in France but lived and wrote in England, possibly for a royal court.
