Miguel Delibes is a wonderful Spanish writer, maybe not so well known out of Spain as he should be. This is one of the finest and most celebrated examples of his work. It shows the fight between tradition and modernity at a small Spanish village. The plot, the vivid descriptions and the portrait of a post-war Spain now gone, all conspire to produce an outstanding book.
