Whereas I initially expected a children's story, "Julian's Cat" in fact deals with a very adult subject, that of animal abandonment and survival. It is a captivating rags-to-cushions-to rags-to-cushions story of a spirited cat, Toy, whose survival instincts kick in just at the right time. The story also is a great period piece of midieval England, and the reader is literally transported to a Renaissance Faire, to witness the sounds, smells and sights of the comercial town center of Norwich, England. If I ever have the chance to see for myself the actual stained glass window depiction of Mother Julian in Norwich Cathedral, I will know the story of little red Toy, sitting contently at her feet.
