Tightly written

A young girl from Scotland, who after working in London, returns to her small hometown with a baby which has been abandoned by its mother. The mother had stolen the lead character's money, money she had intended to "travel the world". Her outlook and fortunes change drastically as she confronts her childhood friends and finds herself leading a totally different life than she had dreamed about. Very well written with highly effective characterizations, especially of the woman who writes the astrology column for the local paper.
