Now in its third edition! Introduction to Telephones and Telephone Systems provides telephone system managers, telecommunications sales professionals, and students with a non-technical,... This description may be from another edition of this product.
I read this because I wanted to learn more about telco equipment. I am a network engineer and work with switches and routers, but didn't know much about the telco stuff. I learned a lot from the book. The most practical things for me were the information on the different types of fiber (multimode, single mode) and how they are different, how voice is sampled (explains why DS0 circuits are 64K) and how calls get routed from point A to point B. It explains a lot about time division multiplexing, wave division multiplexing, and various types of switching equipment. Now I understand what it means to put in my router configuration a line like "isdn switch-type primary-dms100". I think it is a great book to read for someone like myself that is familiar with data networking but wants to know more about the telco side.
interesting and helpful
