Jacqueline Smith wrote a vivid portrayal of what happens when one of the marital partners strays from the marriage in I Am Your Fool. Jayla has it all; a beautiful home and trips with her wonderful husband, Carl, who is a doctor. Jayla has almost everything but sexual satisfaction. So rather than work on her marriage, she takes a lover. Her best friend, Karen, warns Jayla that she is heading into disaster but she will not listen. This causes a rift between the life long friends, as Karen gets tired of lying for Jayla. Karen has had bad relationships and longs for a meaningful relationship and this causes her to feel disappointed in her best friend. Things begin to fall apart between Jayla and Carl but she still tumults head first into a disastrous situation. Carl soon becomes tired of all of the lies and falls into an extra-marital relationship of his own. Jayla begins to see that her lover, Rommel, is using her and decides she wants to make her marriage work but Carl is fed up with her lies and has a new love in his life. As Jayla's problems with Rommel escalate, she finds that the grass is not greener on the other side. Jayla blames everyone else for her problems, even Karen. This book was good right down to the last page with lots of plot twists and excitement, and I did not want this book to end. The writer left no loose ends and gave a nice image of each character; I could picture each one in my mind 's eye. Furthermore, I could not wait to see what would happen next as each drama unfolded. Ms. Smith wrote very strong characters and kept them true to form. The writing was smooth and easy to read even though this book had multiple plots. What a wonderful way to debut!
