Book Overview

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - A "stunning" (America Ferrera) YA novel about a teenager coming to terms with losing her sister and finding herself amid the pressures, expectations, and stereotypes of growing up in a Mexican American home.

"Alive and crackling--a gritty tale wrapped in a page-turner. "--The New York Times

Perfect Mexican daughters do not go away to college. And they do not move out of their parents' house after high school graduation. Perfect Mexican daughters never abandon their family.

But Julia is not your perfect Mexican daughter. That was Olga's role.

Then a tragic accident on the busiest street in Chicago leaves Olga dead and Julia left behind to reassemble the shattered pieces of her family. And no one seems to acknowledge that Julia is broken, too. Instead, her mother seems to channel her grief into pointing out every possible way Julia has failed.

But it's not long before Julia discovers that Olga might not have been as perfect as everyone thought. With the help of her best friend Lorena, and her first love, first everything boyfriend Connor, Julia is determined to find out. Was Olga really what she seemed? Or was there more to her sister's story? And either way, how can Julia even attempt to live up to a seemingly impossible ideal?

Such a good book!

It’s a must read! The drama and strong character is what makes it so interesting! I wished the story went on but it’s perfect the way it is! :)

Relatable!!!

An amazing book! Being chicana and reading the setting and situation i can definitely relate. Just an overall an amazing book, i will give to my teenage daughter for her to read. Depression ans anxiety is real.

Relatable!

I was thoroughly enjoying the book, but somewhere around the last third of it is where I absolutely fell in love.

This book hit so many nails on the head!

You will love this book. As soon as I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. I read this book within a week, if it was up to me (and I didn't have to adult) I would've finished it way sooner. The story is so good and definitely hit many nails on the head when it came to comparing it to my life. You won't regret reading this book.

My new favorite book!

I loved that the book was so relatable. It had me so hooked that I read it in three days. I felt all the emotions that the main character was feeling throughout the book.

my thoughts

I had to get used to the first person present. I did not enjoy the constant reference to other books. It was like, "warn the reader to do research before reading". I enjoyed the Spanglish though, nice touch. The awareness of mental health was on point! Out young people matter too. I appreciate the fact how much Julia respected her parents enough not to break their hearts though.
