Ms. Grenfell traces the introduction of hostas from Japan through Macao to Europe two hundred years ago, detailing the work of nineteenth and twentieth century botanists on the genus, and tracing the sequence of extraordinary mistakes and coincidences which have caused such havoc in hosta nomenclature. There are full and detailed descriptions of the species and a listing and descriptions of more than 150 recommended cultivars, some of which may be better known among English and Continental growers than in the United States.
