In gene therapy, the damaged or defective chromosomes of an individual patient are corrected by the addition of new genes introduced into the patient's DNA. This is a dangerous and controversial technique, on the cutting edge of medical science. "GermLine" gene therapy is even more radical. By altering the reproductive cells, the germ cells, of a single individual, you can forever change the genetic makeup of that person--and all of his or her future descendants But who should control such an awesome power? The government? The medical establishment? Or a hidden conspiracy of the rich and powerful? Dr. Kevin Kincaid, a brilliant scientist whose life has been scarred by personal tragedy, is on the verge of a major breakthrough. After years of research and experimentation, he has developed a biological vector capable of introducing new genes into the germ cells of unborn children while they are still in their mothers' wombs. With this vector, doctors will be able to eradicate genetic diseases such as cystic fibrosis and Down syndrome for all generations to come. But Kincaid's discovery also raises the specter of wholesale genetic engineering, of changing the very nature of humanity itself, which attracts the attention of dangerous forces, including a ruthless government agency, an international conspiracy of wealthy industrialists, and radical terrorists who will stop at nothing, including murder, to keep Kincaid's breakthrough from transforming the world as we know it. Soon the targeted scientist finds himself at the center of a covert war to control the future of human evolution. Betrayed and deceived by those closest to him, he can trust no one-not even a mysterious woman who bears an uncanny resemblance to his long-dead wife. . . .
I couldn't book the book down, and neither could a friend, who picked up the book when I put it down. Am very excited to see book number 2. GREAT read, GREAT book. I see a movie in the future.
Fascinating reading

I found this to be an extremely well-written and interesting novel and actually has two subjects - the one regarding the technical aspects of DNA and what can be done with it and the other the moral aspect of these changes. It is definitely not light reading. Dr. Erlick doesn't water down the technical-medical aspects of genetics and DNA manipulation so it can be confusing or turn off a reader that is expecting more fiction less reality but it's the reality that makes this book such a fascinating read. The moral aspect of genetics and DNA manipulation is shown through the main character's belief in the good that is going to be done, when he is shown that others are using his work to harm others, and the question what do you do when you have to make a personal choice. I'm definitely looking forward to his next book.
Don't read the reviews, read the book for yourself.

I bought this book a couple of weeks before a 5 hour flight and I intended to read this book on the plane. Well, I should not have opened the covers to take a peek because I was hooked. The science in Germline was interesting but for those who are not into cloning and gene therapy, you can skip the science dialog and the story would still make sense. What really facinated me were the thought provoking questions that the story brings forward. The explosions and chase scenes in this story were terrific. As I read it, a Hollywood movie played in my mind. If entertainment is what you need, this is it.
An exciting Science Thriller

An exciting Crichton-like thriller. Many twists and turns. Are the good guys really good? Quick moving story with many twists and turns. Action packed, I couldn't put the book down to see what Erlick would come up with next. Never lacked for a suprise twist. Well researched...this could really happen.
A compelling scientific thriller

I found GermLine to be a fascinating scientific thriller, filled with provocative ideas and an engaging plotline. It does a wonderful job of enlightening the issues related to genetic engineering (specifically Germline therapy), exposing the pros and cons in a way that does not smack of being a blatantly cautionary tale. It is a thought provoking trip that truly shows human motivations and behavior as the driving force behind scientific advances. Hasn't it always been money, greed or war that most propelled mankind in it's most significant leaps of history? I wonder what this really says about mankind? The language and science can be a bit hard to follow, but if you approach the novel with an open mind and allow yourself to be educated as you go along, I don't think you will be disappointed. This is not some purely fluff novel -- it has real thought and intelligence woven in to a fast moving thriller that enlightens as it entertains.
