In the Eucharist we remember and celebrate the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ. The paschal feast is our greatest opportunity to approach God, and to forge the bonds of community within the Church, but too often we slip into a routine practice of the Mass. Fr. Basil Pennington seeks to reawaken the love, joy, and mystery that flow from a committed Eucharistic life. The Eucharist: Wine of Faith, Bread of Life presents Fr. Pennington's many touching stories and profound meditations from more than forty years of celebrating the Mass in every part of the world.
I would disagree with Ms. Streng's review. Fr. Pennington's book is great for one who has always wanted to know more behind the words the priest says during the Eucharistic Prayers each Sunday. I highly recommend this book for that purpose. It will bring more to your worship.
The love, joy, and mystery of the Eucharist

One of the charms of Father Pennington's books is the fact that he writes about such deep and sacred mysteries in such a simple loving way. This book on the Eucharist is no exception. In it he covers every part of the Mass and reminds all of us who go to Mass regularly about the importance of small things which make all the difference: taking the time to enjoy the beauty of our church; pausing after the readings to pick a phrase, thought, or idea to carry with us; being truly present to those around us during the exchange of the peace. He makes these suggestions while also imparting the facts of the history of the Eucharist (both in East and West) and the reasons for liturgical reform. Father Pennigton closes by recommending that we ask ourselves the nightly question: How was what I received at the Eucharist shared today? Was I a sacrament of the love and compassionate care of Christ? This book is warmly recommended to all who want to make the most of their lives in Christ both at Mass and beyond.
