Freire shares a vision for how to awaken a culture to what is really there.

I have heard this book labled as having to do with a "pedagogy of the oppressed." I can concede to that categorization so long as we realize that oppression has many faces. By exploring the nature of learning (which, as the book spells out, takes place in and through relationship and reflection), Freire points to the critial issue of an internal and communal awakening. This book is about raising the consciousness of a people. The oppressed are any group who are in a stupor, who feel themselves powerless to effect change or authentically interact with and participate in the systems of society. But once aware of their stupor, they are able to shake it off and to begin to live and act with intentionality; in short, they become aware of freedom. This book provides a methodology to facilitate that awakening and awareness. I would love to see a revival of this book.

This book includes a detailed explanation of the methodologies leading to Pedagogy of the Oppressed. It would be a good "pre-reading" book or post-reading book for those interested in Ped. of the Oppressed. It really brings to life the methods to the wonderful and loving pedagogy that Freire exudes throughout his work. This is a must have for those who buy Ped. of Opp.
