This small book presents brief thumbnail sketches of 172 Civil War Commanders, primarily general officers, and, of those, mostly brigadiers. Almost all of the biographies are accompanied by photographs which enhance the text. Although I read this book, I think its real value is as a handy reference for beginning or intermediate Civil War readers, those who aren't familiar with all the players. It certainly would have been of value to me had I had it by my side when I read General Grant's Memoirs and biographies of Generals Sherman and Sheridan. If nothing else, it would have helped put any number of relatively unknown officers on both sides into some sort of perspective and, by doing so, would have made those stories much more meaningful. Assuming that it is intended as a reference book, I'll have to give it five stars.
