People could perform any varna dharna on the basis of their merit, that is, on the basis of education and purity, any person could become a Brahmin by attaining the title of a Brahmin and doing the work of a Brahmin, that is, the worshiper, in the Gurukula.
Over time, some devious people, with the intention of not leaving the high place in the society and leaving that high place for their upcoming generations, brought it on the basis of birth by the Brahmin class.
