Not only is it a good story with believable characters, it feels honest and has a yerning sadness to it. I really recommend it to anyone just wanting to sit back and enjoy the story. I have never read a western before and this has incouraged me to do so. By the way, Marcher was a great character. I didn't know if I wanted him to die or live!
Read it four times so far.

This book is my favorite western/historical fiction. It ranks right up there with The Big Sky by A. B. Guthrie. Mr. Ross does a great job with his descriptions of the land, the people, and the times. His weaving of his story around an actual event is superb. I was unaware of the epic battle between the Sioux and Crow intil I had read this novel. Curiosity led me to investigate the battle and found that it had actually taken place. As I read through the book, I began hoping that a sequel would be written, to continue the story of the lead character, White River. So far, that seems to not have happened. Too Bad. This book was an inspiration to me to try my own hand at writing a historical fiction. I only hope my efforts will be close to as fantastic as this novel. Great Job, Mr. Ross. Mike

I don't know what happened to Ross, but I do wish he would get back to writing Westerns. "Beyond the Stars" is every bit as good as a Terry Johnston story - which is a great compliment for you non-western readers. Mr. Ross, where are you?
