The original name of "Benoit" was a baptismal name "Benedict" and this medieval given name owes its popularity in the middle ages chiefly to "Saint Benedict" (480-550) who founded the Benedictine Order of Monks at Monte Cassino. The surname "Benoit" was first found in "Longuedoc, France" where the family held family seats since ancient times. The linage of this great family descend from Saint Benedict (480-550) to Saint Benoit d'Aniane (750-821) who was the son of "Algulphe" Count of Maguelone, France. He occupied the distinguished rank at the Court of Pepin and Charlemagne. By the 1300's the family was well established in the region of "Longuedoc", where several members distinguished themselves through their contributions to the community in which they lived. They received large grants of Land, Titles, and letters patent confirming their Nobility. A descendant "Gilles Benoit" was made a Knight in recognition of his service to the region and his Nobles. Another descendant "Paul Benoit" (b) 1626 son of Francois Benoit & Marie Chatelain, arrived in New France (Montreal) Quebec, Canada on Sept. 16, 1653 and worked as a carpenter. He eventually married "Isabelle Elizabeth Gobinet" on Sept. 16, 1658, and raised a large family of 13 children. Paul Benoits sons became Canoeist, Fur Traders and Fur Trappers, working for the family of Choquet, namely "Nicolas & son Julien". The family of Choquet also recruited sons of family "Giroux" as well. The Benoit's, Choquet's and the Giroux friendships has lasted for over 300 years with members of the families marrying into each of the others, over the past down to the present 1900's, in Canada and the United States.
