A heart-warming picture book for kids ages 3-7 about a bear who finds pleasure in solitude and the great outdoors--from the creator of the Benny and Penny series. The first reissue of Geoffrey Hayes's classic children's book in over two decades Bear by Himself is a sweet tale of the joys and rewards of solitude. In seven simple yet lyrical sentences, we follow Bear by himself from the country into town, from day to night, from adventure and contemplation to bedtime and dreamland. Through this journey, readers get to see how Bear's senses are heightened and his imagination enriched by his ability to pause and enjoy the world around him. First published by Harper & Row in 1976, this classic children's picture book was Geoffrey Hayes's first. He went on to become a successful author, illustrator, and cartoonist, best known for his Benny and Penny series. NYRB Kids is excited to bring back this classic, long out of print, with Hayes's original illustrations. Bear and his adventures provide a much-needed example of how to have fun by yourself and explore the wonderful world around you, lessons as timeless as Bear himself.
When I was little, my parents (mostly my dad) read this to me all the time and I loved it! It is so sweet and I think every partent should read it to their kids!

I used to read this book to my children when they were very small. It was a reminder to them that everyone needs quiet time. I was hearbroken when it got lost and searched everywhere for it. Now that it is back in print I can read it to my youngest! I would love to get a copy of the original as the illustrations were so peaceful and beautiful.
What Happened?

I have been searching for this book for over 20 years - the best I could do was a photocopy from a library copy. Imagine how thrilled I was when it was published anew .... but the illustrations have been changed!!! The quaint, incredible drawings have been redone and are far more trite and less appealing. I was so dissappointed . . . the text remains perfect (hence the nine) but I urge you to look for an older edition - this one simply can't compare.
I'm so glad this book is Available again!!!!

I originally read this book over 12 years ago in college. My friend, who was an elementary education major simply wouldn't part with her copy. I have spent this last 12 years looking in second-hand bookstores for an old copy and now I find I can get a brand new copy for myself!!! I even remember the first line in the book "There are times when a bear has to be by himself to think his own thoughts and sing his own songs." I can't wait to read this book to my nieces, nephews or anyone in general who will listen.
