Book Overview

Continuing the narrative from Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon, Barbicane, Nicholl, and Michael are ready to travel to the moon in All Around the Moon. The three men sit anxiously in their bullet-shaped projectile, ready for take-off. After the launch, their series of adventures and misadventures begin. Barbicane, Nicholl, and Michael must be quick and clever, as they brave an encounter with an asteroid, suffer accidental intoxication, deviate from their course, and face the consequences of miscalculation. Finally, they arrive at the moon. However, instead of landing on the moon like the group planned, their spaceship is stuck in the moon's orbit. Still, Barbicane, Nicholl, and Michael are in awe. As they gaze upon the moon's intricate features, memorizing its landscape and craters, the three men realize that they have the sole privilege of seeing the moon--an observation that no man or woman on Earth had yet achieved. But as they dream of the fame and luxurious treatment they are sure to gain back on Earth, another misstep threatens their trip again, and this time, the consequences could be fatal.

A very exciting and entertaining read

This book picks up immediately after From the Earth to the Moon ended. Our three intrepid astronauts are now on their way to the Moon, and begin making amazing discoveries immediately. It seems that the Earth's gravity has captured a new small satellite, an erstwhile meteor. However, the gravity of this small companion has caused a deviation of the trajectory of their ship, and it appears that they are not going to land on the Moon after all, but merely orbit it. But all is not lost, there are still more discoveries to make, and who knows what they might think of along the way! Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon was first published in 1865(!), and this book was published in 1870, in answer to the public's demand to know what became of the astronauts. This book is as much fun as the first book in the series. True, the science behind this book is even less accurate than the first, but it is, nonetheless a very exciting and entertaining read. If you want to read a really entertaining work of paleo-science-fiction, then get this book, you will not be disappointed!

One of Verne's great space novels

The sequel to From the Earth to the Moon I found incredible, for the charaters make a very accurate map of the moon. However, they eventually get caught in a predicament of returning to Earth, but they make it back.

Will all return safely?

This is the sequel to "From the Earth to the Moon." It was first published in 1870 and, although it contains many scientific errors, it also contains some accurate predictions as well. It is perhaps the very first novel to treat travel in space. It was surprisingly fun reading. However, care should be exercised. There are a number of very poor translations available. Make sure yours is fine. In the story, the travelers are unable to land on the moon. They see the "dark" side of the moon before they head back to Earth.
