This is an excellent book for someone just getting interested in the Pacific War between Japan and the Allies. At 176 pages, it's too short to cover any one aspect in detail. But there are so many very good B & W photos of the ships, planes, especially those in action, it really gives you a good sense of what this very complex theater was all about. The narrative is easy to follow, there are maps to help the reader. The best thing about this book are the color plates of the aircraft (Allied and Japanese). There is a short appendix that gives some technical data about the planes, but again, it's a primer. I have studied all of the major battles in the Pacific War, and it's nice to step back once in awhile and see the overall view. I know I would have enjoyed this book very much in high school. 4 stars for being a good primer, less one star because it's primary focus is on the naval war and omits a lot of the other battles that were fought by the Army. If you can pick one up at a reasonable price, you wont be sorry.
