Book Overview

"Always remember that during your lifetime, the rules of etiquette may change, but courtesy and good manners will always be important."-- from Chapter III, Daily Courtesies

Since the early 1900s the students of a small Dominican School in Northern California received a little book containing simple rules for "the art of living." Written by Sr. Mary Mercedes, O.P., this handbook shows how small acts of kindness and thoughtfulness can help us regain the joy of living. This timeless book combines compelling epigraphs from a diverse pool of great writers and thinkers (including Homer, Oglala Sioux Chief Flying Hawk, and Eleanor Roosevelt) with hints on everything from the art of introductions to suggestions on how to be a good guest, write a letter of condolence, or set a dinner table.

As the world becomes increasingly indifferent to social rules, the sense of etiquette that we once took for granted is fast disappearing. A Book of Courtesy provides a charming, beneficial antidote to this dilemma, restoring the Golden Rule to its rightful place of honor and proving that good etiquette never goes out of style. Here is a practical, reliable guide to proper conduct in every situation.

For those of all ages who need/want a brush up on manners

OK. So many people think manners are out of fashion or stodgy, but this little book, written particularly for young people in highschool and college, will put all of that kind of thinking into perspective. "A Book of Courtesy" focusses on the importance of respect for other people and their feelings and how to do the small things in daily life that can make such a difference in developing good relationships, whether in family, friend or business environments. I recommend it for anyone who wants or needs a gentle 'brush up' on manners and courtesy, and for any young person who wants or needs a primer on basic manners and courtesy. My kids (ages 20 and 25) have found it invaluable, and they are now coaching my nieces (ages 8, 10 and 12) on some of the chapters. It makes things so much nicer around here to have everyone 'coached' with this little book!

A "must-have" for every grad

This easy-to-read book of courtesy is a "must-have" for everyone... makes an especially wonderful gift for graduates. As stated above, etiquette may change, but having courtesy for others does not. From stressing the importance of being prompt to understanding which utensils to use at the table, this book provides the foundation for anyone who wants to be successful in life.
