"An enormously smart, clear-eyed, brave-hearted, and quite personal look at the benefits of meditation."

--Elizabeth Gilbert

Nightline anchor Dan Harrisembarks on an unexpected, hilarious, and deeply skeptical odyssey through the strange worlds of spirituality and self-help, and discovers a way to get happier that is truly achievable.

After having a nationally televised panic attack, Dan Harris knew he had to make some changes. A lifelong nonbeliever, he found himself on a bizarre adventure involving a disgraced pastor, a mysterious self-help guru, and a gaggle of brain scientists. Eventually, Harris realized that the source of his problems was the very thing he always thought was his greatest asset: the incessant, insatiable voice in his head, which had propelled him through the ranks of a hypercompetitive business, but had also led him to make the profoundly stupid decisions that provoked his on-air freak-out.

Finally, Harris stumbled upon an effective way to rein in that voice, something he always assumed to be either impossible or useless: meditation, a tool that research suggests can do everything from lower your blood pressure to essentially rewire your brain. 10% Happier takes readers on a ride from the outer reaches of neuroscience to the inner sanctum of network news to the bizarre fringes of America's spiritual scene, and leaves them with a takeaway that could actually change their lives.

More stories than solutions

This book was well written. It is more of a recount of Dan Harris' experiences and work references. It was easy to read, as he is a good writer, but there were not a lot of useful "tools" on how to become happier. Meditation and Mark Epstein being a key person of influence for Dan Harris is the key take away. From that perspective, it showed good references for that tool. Other than that, I found myself having to skim through a lot of the book because I really didn't care about the "who Dan Harris knew" and "what job Dan Harris did."

An ABC News Journalist Turns the Tables on Himself

An expose on bogus self help and an eye-opener on the real thing. Dan Harris takes you on his path and you come out the other end with clearer thinking and more realistic expections, especially of yourself. Honest, candid, well-researched, clearly stated. Excellent writing, modest advice, a heartfelt challenge to the human spirit. Intellect and skepticism meet reality and transformation. 10% improvement in personal joy is actually a lot - in fact, you'll find it's more than plenty.

If the term "self-help" makes you roll your eyes or the thought of going on a play date with your inner tween makes you cringe, then this blog is for you! (Note: we do use the term "self-help" but only because the thesaurus alternatives are lame and "independent quest for human improvement" doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue.)
